Are there any books about South Park?

Official South Park Books

The entries on this page are official South Park books. They were commissioned by Comedy Central and use original footage from the series, but fans should be aware that Trey Parker and Matt Stone have never written a book themselves. Unfortunately there are no German versions of these books.

Background information on 5 seasons, one double page per episode
There are all kinds of South Park books, calendars, and comics. However, if you are looking for hard facts about the series, the official episode guides by Sam Stall are the best choice. The only requirement: knowledge of English, as there is no German version.
Information about the first five seasons is offered in an appealing presentation. A double page is dedicated to each episode. On the left side the plot is summarized and garnished with a few quotes. Nice, but for most fans this shouldn't be the reason to buy. It gets exciting on the second page, which contains a colorful mixture of facts. What are the parodies alluding to? Which celebrities have guest appearances? What is there to report about the making of the episode? Which songs are there? How did Trey Parker and Matt Stone come up with the idea in the first place? From weird fun facts to really exciting background stories, everything is represented so that reading is not boring. And long-time fans are sure to find out one or the other piece of news. You can also find the information at the Planearium, but sometimes you want to be able to look something up offline :). The fun costs around 13 € and is my personal book recommendation. A must have for all fans!

Background information on 5 seasons, one double page per episode
Actually I could write the same about this as I wrote about the first South Park Episode Guide. It is a direct sequel that has the same structure and deals with seasons 6 to 10 instead of the first 5 seasons. It makes sense to put both volumes on the shelf, but if you can't do anything with the early seasons, you will of course also enjoy this one individually. Again, a double page is dedicated to each episode with a table of contents, quotes and lots of exciting background information. It's just a shame that no third band has been announced for seasons 11 to 15 so far.

Notes for 11 songs from the film (piano, guitar, vocals)
This music book is the ideal purchase for anyone who wants to play back the great songs from the South Park film. The lyrics can now also be found free of charge on the Internet (for example here at the Planearium;)), but having the sheet music for them will certainly appeal to one or the other amateur musician. There are no illustrations or additional information, it is actually a very classic music book.
These 11 songs are included with English lyrics: Mountain Town, Uncle Fucka, It's easy mmmkay, Blame Canada, Kyle's Mom's a Bitch, What would Brian Boitano do ?, Up there, La Resistance, I can change, I'm super, Mountain Town recapitulation.

Illustrated quotes from the series on 12 topics
This booklet, which costs 10 €, is an illustrated, English-language collection of quotes on South Park. It is small, but of high quality, bound with a dust jacket and completely in color. On each page you can see a scene from the series with a short quote, the whole being divided into 12 chapters according to topic. There is also a foreword by Brian Boitano, from THE hero South Parks par excellence :).
A nice little gift for South Park fans, but for those who follow the series diligently, this guide offers nothing new in terms of content. One has leafed through it quickly and one can wonder for whom it brings a real value. Hardcore fans know the quotes anyway, and those who are not familiar with the series are unlikely to stumble upon this book. So you should have a special fondness for quotes in order to have fun with them for more than a few minutes. After all, these are very nicely prepared. Everything from seasons 1 to 12 is covered, unlike the Best Of DVDs, which usually exclude the first seasons. However, this guide is not suitable as a reference work, because it does not state from which episodes the quotations come.
Because of its very limited information content, I would advise South Park fans to get the official episode guides rather than spend money on them. It also contains quotes, but the episodes are also summarized and you get a lot of interesting background information and fun facts. However, if you want to complete your collection, you can of course access it.
There now seems to be a second edition with a different cover. I cannot say with certainty whether it also contains a dust jacket or is cheaper.

Strategy Guide for the video game "The Stick of Truth"
Anyone who buys the role-playing game "South Park: The Stick of Truth" may also be toying with the official solution book. It's thick, colorful and at first glance it makes a very good impression. Since the game has no German voice output anyway, it shouldn't be too big a problem that there is no German version of the guide. However, you have to remember to change the language of the texts in the game to English, otherwise you may not understand which object or which ability is meant.

Content:

16 pages of general tips
24 pages about the classes
28 pages on allies and enemies
50 Pages Walkthrough: Places
168 pages of walkthrough: main quests
48 pages walkthrough: side quests
6 pages of achievements and collectibles
26 pages lists of all objects

It looks nice, but when I took a closer look at the book, I was a bit disappointed. Much of the information is superficial or even redundant, while the really important pointers are missing. So more appearance than reality.
A large part of the content is the description of the main quests, but because of the linear gameplay and the easy level of difficulty you can't go wrong with them. "The Stick of Truth" is not a game where you get lost or have to solve difficult puzzles to get further. That is why I was not particularly pleased that so much space is given to the mere description of the tasks, which you can read up in the game. A very important aspect is missing completely: Which items and achievements can you miss? This is the place where it gets really difficult and you cannot be successful without a guide. Unfortunately, there are no tips on this topic. Although there are lists of hidden objects at the locations, the guide is disappointing or even useless for 100% hunters. Only 6 pages? It would have been better to do without anything else.
If you don't intend to play at 100% anyway, the guide is a nice reference work. However, one should not overestimate its usefulness. Most of what it tells you can be found out by yourself, as the game's level of difficulty, as I said, is not particularly high.

P.S. I then wrote my own "100% Guide" as a supplement, you can find it here.
