The Balinese cuisine

The Balinese cuisine reflects the influences of the cultures and the past of this island. Spices and flavors from Chinese, Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine have fused with the original Javanese recipes over the years. The culinary art in Bali is just as unique as the culture and the way of life of the islanders. That is why the dishes sometimes differ significantly from the usual Indonesian dishes.

Unlike in the rest of Indonesia, pork dishes such as suckling pig or grill ribs are a specialty here. This is because most of the residents of Bali are Hindu and not Muslim. Due to the Hindu belief, however, you will not find any beef in Balinese cuisine.

You can find traditional food almost everywhere in Bali. Even restaurants with an emphasis on western food offer traditional Balinese dishes. If you don't necessarily want to go to a classic restaurant, then just visit one of the many "Warungs"

What is a warung?

A warung, formerly also Waroeng, is a small restaurant or café in Indonesia. These are almost exclusively small family businesses. Many of these stores are located on the ground floor of a private home. Most of these small kitchens cook fresh every morning. At around 11 a.m., the dishes are ready and eaten throughout the day. Since the food is not kept warm, it is eaten cold in the evening. This is quite normal in Bali, but also in many Asian countries in general. In typical warungs, the food is kept in metal bowls behind a pane of glass. So everyone can see what is available on that day.

Warungs can also be small booths or street food stalls. In any case, they are an important part of Indonesian culture. Nowadays you can read this word more often in Bali than ever before. The residents consciously use this term to point out to tourists the authenticity of their shop.

Is Balinese Food Spicy?

Contrary to what many people think, the Balinese dishes are not spicy in and of themselves. For most Balinese dishes, however, sambal is also served in a small bowl. So everyone can decide for themselves how spicy they would like their food to be.

What is sambal

Sambal is a thick Indonesian seasoning sauce or chili sauce. The main ingredients are different types of chilies. In addition, depending on the variant, additional ingredients such as tomatoes, shrimp paste, garlic, ginger, onion, palm sugar or lime juice are added.
