Add multiple users on Android: Here's how

Dennis Steimels

If you use your Android device such as smartphone or tablet with several people, it is high time for user accounts. We'll show you how to manage users, add users and set up a guest account.

EnlargeUser accounts also pay off on smartphones.

What is standard under Windows and Mac OS, you can use your Android devices such as tablets and smartphones on selected mobile devices since Android 4.2 and on all mobile devices since Android 5.0: Manage multiple users and create guest accounts.

Update: It is no longer possible to create user and guest accounts on all devices. On the Samsung Galaxy S8 and higher, for example, this option is no longer available.

Advantages of user accounts on Android

If you share a cell phone or a tablet with your family or partner, different user accounts are the ideal solution so that everyone has their own area with applications and the data remains private. Each user can use their own apps and save their login data or save photos and videos that are only visible to the respective account.

While "real" users set up a completely independent profile with their own password, pattern or fingerprint, you can create a guest account for spontaneous use by friends or the like. Accordingly, guests have no access to their private data and can use the browser, for example.

In some cases, as an admin, you can also assign rights to other users, for example preventing children from downloading paid apps or only being able to use certain areas of the smartphone. However, not all systems or devices support this function. As a rule, you can at least set whether SMS and calls are also activated for the respective profile.

Set up a user account on Android: This is how it works

Android 5.0 or higher should be installed on your smartphone for the next steps. We performed this example on the Google Pixel with the latest Android version 7.1 (Stock - without user interface).

Info: However, the owner of the smartphone or tablet can delete apps for all users or remove the storage space of other accounts. Each user can also update applications, which are then brought up to date in each account. Only add new users for people you trust.

Tip: Child mode - Android sharing without hesitation

Add user: Navigate to "Users & Profiles" in the Android settings. In the menu you will already find yourself as a user - "I (Android)" - and a guest account. Use "+ Add user" to create additional user profiles. Either you set this up, or better the respective user with their Google account and other data such as security options.

The new user can then fully use the smartphone in his area. However, he has no access to the private data of the owner and the other profiles.

Guest account for quick access

A guest account is worthwhile if you only make your Android device available to a friend for a short time so that they can use the browser or make phone calls, for example - without accidentally or intentionally accessing your private data. In this case, it is not worth hiring a full-fledged user.

Each time you switch to "Guest", you have the option of continuing the previous session or starting a new session. The latter is useful if someone other than before is using the guest account.

Settings made by a guest also apply to all users, but not everybody. For example, if he activates NFC, this applies to everyone; if he deactivates the location, it is only switched off for the guest area.

Telephone calls are forbidden to the guest unless you as the admin give them the rights to do so. It is essential to pay attention to the allocation of rights, otherwise you could possibly face a high telephone bill, provided that no Allnet-Flat is integrated in your tariff.
