Why do students fail

Ministry of Culture: Increasingly, students fail at high school

STUTTGART. Increasingly, students in Baden-Württemberg have to leave high school because they cannot keep up there. According to figures from the Ministry of Culture, exactly 2204 high school students switched to a Realschule, 69 to a Werkreal or Hauptschule and 182 to a community school in the 2017/2018 school year. For comparison: In the 2011/2012 school year, 1,888 high school students switched to a Realschule and 77 to a Werkreal- and Hauptschule. Overall, the number of high school students has declined during this time.

"The number of people switching schools has risen across the country in recent years," said a spokeswoman for Education Minister Susanne Eisenmann (CDU) in Stuttgart on Wednesday. "This is also due to the fact that in the last legislature the binding force of the primary school recommendation was abolished." The primary school recommendation is the primary school's recommendation as to which type of secondary school is suitable for a child after the fourth grade.

The previous green-red government had abolished the elementary school recommendation for the 2012/2013 school year. The incumbent green-black state government has arranged that the primary school recommendation of the secondary school must be presented again when registering. This has been in effect since the beginning of the 2017/2018 school year and took effect for the first time for registration in 2018.

The decision as to which type of school your child should attend is still made by the parents. If the recommendation differs from the type of school chosen, the secondary school can offer advice. dpa
