What's next after civil engineering

Civil engineers design our built environment in civil engineering, transport and hydraulic engineering. You are significantly involved in economical and ecologically compatible solutions. They plan and build structures that can safely withstand all stresses of use and the environment over the years, and they solve building maintenance tasks. Qualities such as perseverance, patience, logical thinking skills and a strong ability to concentrate are among the necessary prerequisites for being able to do justice to the job description of civil engineer.

This course is aimed at Graduates from higher technical institutes (HTL) specializing in structural engineering with at least one year of practical experience. HTL graduates (structural engineering) can be given a higher ranking after an individual comparison of the curriculum, the study period is shortened accordingly from eight to four semesters.

After a common two-semester basis, the students deepen themselves in one of the chosen directions in the third and fourth semester: "Building construction", "Structural engineering" or "Construction company / construction industry".

Registration and information

HTL diploma in construction

The further qualification program "DI (FH) in civil engineering" is based on a completed HTL training in structural engineering. The HTL can be completed through the five-year full-time form, through the HTL for working people, the college or on the external path.

Approval procedure for builders

As part of a separate test procedure, master builders (with university entrance qualification), after having completed their professional experience (at least 1 year after the BM examination), can also recognize a large number of competencies from the basic course, so that entry into the course is basically possible.

At least one year of relevant practical experience

After completing the HTL, at least one year of practical experience in construction must be completed. This minimum practice enables students during their studies to better combine what they have learned with what they have already experienced in practice.

In the grading procedure, the equivalence of the competencies acquired through previous training and practice with the modules / coursework of the basic course at the HTWK Leipzig is checked.

The HTWK Leipzig was after long tradition of technical educational institutions Founded in 1992. It has its roots in the Leipzig Technical University, which was founded in 1977, which was created by merging the Leipzig University of Civil Engineering, the Leipzig University of Engineering and the technical schools for librarians, booksellers and librarians and the Institute for Museology.
Today, as a university of applied sciences with currently around 6,200 students, it is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Germany. The university's seven faculties (architecture and social sciences, civil engineering, electrical engineering and information technology, computer science, mathematics and natural sciences, mechanical and energy engineering, media and economics) offer a wide range of courses and cooperate in research and development with companies in the region.
Above all because of the good work-life balance, I chose Ingenium, but also because there is a connection to Austria. What I also like about the partner university is that it enjoys the reputation of the most venerable university of applied sciences in Germany with very good professors.
I really appreciated that it was possible to study part-time. You didn't have to worry about organizing scripts, timetables or exam dates.
I also liked the on-site block courses on Friday and Saturday. The support from the study provider during the studies was also very good, namely inconspicuous. As soon as you had a problem, you were well looked after.
I remembered getting to know the other colleagues very positively, because the colleagues are all very hardworking, professionally experienced and determined. In addition, the HTWK has very experienced professors with a background in practical experience, which I really appreciated at the partner university.

Continue to the Master of Engineering

The master's degree in civil engineering is based on the first academic degree in civil engineering. Through a wide range of elective modules, special knowledge and methods in the subjects of building construction, structural engineering or construction industry and construction are conveyed and deepened.
With the master’s degree, executives in the construction industry are to be equipped with the necessary management tools and specialist knowledge. The master’s degree enables access to a doctorate at a university.

    Frequently asked questions

The diploma course offered here is a program of the HTWK Leipzig. The HTWK Leipzig is the largest building college in Germany, it is one of the leading institutions in Europe in this field and also one of the oldest educational institutions in the country.

Ingenium was founded to promote international university cooperation. The aim is to offer tailor-made educational programs for graduates from higher vocational schools. This joint study model was developed in partnership with the HTWK Leipzig, the Austrian construction industry and the Austrian HTLs.

The HTL is the location partner for this course. All weekend events take place at the HTL. In addition, the HTL is an ideal partner to support your studies, as the high-quality teaching staff guarantees expert support on site.

    How does the thesis work?

The diploma thesis is a scientific piece of work that in many cases deals with a practical topic from your own company. When a topic has been found, the student looks for a supervisor for this thesis. You can draw on the entire teaching staff at the university. The final definition of the thesis topic takes place in direct consultation with the respective supervisory professor. The block week in Leipzig should be used to find a supervisor and to keep in touch. The second supervisor must come from the relevant subject area and have completed at least a technical college or university degree; this can also be a person from your own professional environment. The second supervisor is the on-site support staff and participates in the evaluation of the work.

Teaching is provided by lecturers from the HTWK Leipzig. The lecturers come to the HTL for the teaching units, present the examination material and provide information on exam preparation. The assessment of the exams or practical work is also carried out by the lecturer. For any additional units on site, the teaching staff of the HTL provides support. However, additional units are an exception, as the course content should be largely clarified on the weekend.
How is the course recognized in Europe?

The degree course "Civil Engineering" is an academic program of the HTWK Leipzig (FH). The degree "Dipl.-Ing. (FH)" is recognized throughout Europe in accordance with EU Directive 2005/36 / EC and thus allows the unrestricted use of this academic degree. The course has been approved by the Saxon State Ministry. The graduate of this postgraduate course receives a full diploma, which is linked to the award of 240 ECTS points. 120 ECTS points are acquired from competencies to be recognized outside of the studies at the HTWK Leipzig and 120 ECTS points from the four-semester postgraduate course.

This course is registered in the Austrian Ministry of Science in accordance with § 27 HS Quality Assurance Act. Ingenium Education is certified according to ISO 9001, ISO 29990 and ISO 21001 and listed at Ö-Cert. This basically offers access to funding programs in Austria.

Course of the distance learning elements?

At the beginning of their studies, each participant receives access data for the online platform on ilias.ingenium.co.at. The lecture / learning documents for the next course can be downloaded there and are therefore available at any time, regardless of location.

At the weekend, the material in these documents is taught and worked through. Until the examination phase at the end of the semester, the content taught on this weekend will be learned and deepened in self-study. If you have any questions or problems, Ingenium provides additional afternoon or evening sessions. Experience has shown that this is only necessary to a limited extent.

    Crediting of ECTS points?
Upon completion of this course, you will receive a full diploma degree, which is linked to the award of 240 ECTS points. As part of the grading process, pre-qualifications of up to 90 ECTS points can be recognized, 30 ECTS points come from the completed practical phase in the course, 120 ECTS points must be completed for a positive degree in the context of further studies.
    How are the holidays divided?
The lecture weekends and examination weeks usually take place from March to early July and from September to early February. In midsummer (mid-July to the end of August) there will be no lecture, and around Christmas time the gap between the next unit will be a little longer.
How does the admission process work?

If the admission requirements are met, a place can be reserved using the registration form. A direct admission without an additional entrance examination takes place if the following points are met:

Completion of a relevant HTL (structural engineering)
+ one year of relevant professional experience after the HTL
(Builders can be accepted by means of an individual competency comparison and practice)

How do the exams work? What happens in the exam week?
In principle, there is always an examination week at the HTWK Leipzig at the end of the semester. During this block week, all exams for the current semester are taken (six exams). A consultation is offered in advance of the examination. The time in Leipzig is also used for laboratory internships and exercises. The focus of these block weeks is of course keeping in contact with the university, in higher semesters for discussions about the diploma thesis, etc.
    Do you need further information?
    Repetitions of exams
As a rule, students have the right to at least one repetition. This can take place as part of the block weeks in Leipzig. Once a semester, an examination date is also offered for repeaters and repeaters - usually in Linz - for a limited selection of modules. As part of a repeat examination, examinations can also be repeated. Advancing exams is not permitted.
