Use software updates memory

If you need more storage space for an update

When you update your iOS or iPadOS device over a wireless connection, you might receive a message that there is not enough free space on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The following steps can help resolve the issue.

If there isn't enough space to download and install an update, your device will temporarily delete parts of installed apps that are available for download. You don't have to delete or move any content. If there is still not enough space on your device afterwards, you have several options for updating:

  • Connect your device to your computer to update from your computer.
  • Remove content from your device and try the update again.
  • Manage the storage on your device with recommendations.

Update with your computer

To download the latest version of iOS or iPadOS on your computer, do the following:

  1. On a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15, open Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier, or on a PC, open iTunes.
  2. Connect the device to your computer.
  3. Find the device on the computer. You may need to trust your device to continue.
  4. Click on "Check for Update".
  5. Click on "Load and Update".

If you see any other error message during the update, here's how to fix it.

Delete content manually

You can see how much space your apps are using and delete apps you don't need. You can reload purchased apps or other content at a later time.

  1. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings> General> [Device] Storage.
  2. Tap an app to see how much space it is using.
  3. Tap on "Delete App". With some apps, such as B. Music and videos, you can delete parts of the documents and data.
  4. Install the update again. Go to Settings> General> Software Update.

Manage storage with recommendations

In iOS 11 and later and iPadOS, you can find tips on how to save storage space and delete or move apps and content that you don't need. You can reload purchased apps or other content at a later time.

  1. Go to Settings> General> [Device] Storage.
  2. Scroll to the Recommendations section for tips.
