Bombardier engineer wins "Clara Jaschke Innovation Award 2020"

This year's “Clara Jaschke Innovation Award” goes to Sara Valipour, engineer at the global mobility provider Bombardier Transportation in Hennigsdorf. The organizing transport alliance "Allianz pro Schiene" announced this today in Berlin. The prize is awarded annually to successful women in the railway industry who are shaping the mobility of the future with innovative ideas.

Sara Valipour has been working at the Hennigsdorf site for around two years and, with Data Science, has developed an analysis method that can be used to precisely predict and improve the reliability of trains. For this purpose, error messages from Bombardier trains are recorded across Europe. This also includes data from systems such as air conditioning, brakes or doors.
Based on calculations or field data, the analysis data is used at the beginning of the development phase of a train and is constantly updated throughout the entire process. The collected data are clustered and evaluated in standardized error categories in order to develop solutions to improve reliability using appropriate algorithms. With this so-called "Design for Reliability" method, all functions involved, from the system-critical train control to the convenience-relevant socket or reading lamp, are included. This provides a holistic and cross-functional view that enables an exact prediction of the reliability of the trains.
The interdisciplinary digital data acquisition and analysis can also identify sources of error that might otherwise have gone undetected. These findings are immediately forwarded to the responsible departments for troubleshooting in order to prevent train delays or cancellations. In addition, the data can be used to determine the number of additional systems that are required as a fall-back level, for example for a defective air conditioning system. At the same time, a service life analysis can be derived from the data, which with predictive maintenance can extend both the maintenance intervals and the service life of the trains.
The award ceremony for the former mobility designer innovation prize will take place in April 2021 as part of the leading international trade fair for transport technology "InnoTrans2021".

The 38-year-old Sara Valipour has master's degrees in "Process Engineering and Energy Technology" and "Mechanical Engineering / Automotive Engineering" from the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and the Iran University of Science and Technology. In the course of her career she worked in various companies and functions in the railway industry, for example as depot manager for braking systems at the railway company of the Islamic Republic of Iran or as a project engineer for signaling and control systems in Wuppertal. Sara Valipour has been the reliability team at Bombardier Transportation since the beginning of 2019.
