How are the tourists in Djibouti?

Tourism in Djibouti

Djibouti recorded a total of 63,000 tourists in 2013, ranking 192nd in the world in absolute terms. No more recent data has been published since then.

It is obvious that smaller countries regularly perform worse in a comparison of the absolute number of guests. If you convert the number of tourists to the inhabitants of Djibouti, the picture is somewhat more comparable: With 0.065 tourists per inhabitant, Djibouti ranked 163rd in the world. In East Africa, 7th place behind Mozambique.

In 2018, Djibouti generated around 48.26 million euros in the tourism sector alone. This corresponds to 1.6 percent of the gross domestic product and around 0 percent of all international tourism income in East Africa.

Development of the tourism sector in Djibouti from 1995 to 2013

The graph below shows the number of foreign tourists registered in Djibouti each year. A tourist is anyone who spends at least one night in the country but does not live there for more than 12 months. To the extent that the survey also included the purpose of travel, business travel and other non-tourism purposes have already been filtered out. The number of people passing through within the same day and, for example, crew members of ship or aircraft crews, is also not regarded as a tourist purpose in most countries. If the same person travels in and out several times within a year, each visit counts again.

Development of tourism income

In 1995 the income from tourism was 3.96 million euros, around 1.1 percent of the gross national product. With around 21,000 tourists at the time, this corresponded to around 188 euros per person. Within 23 years, the country's dependence on tourism has increased noticeably. In the last year of the survey, sales now amount to EUR 48.26 million, or 1.9 percent of the gross national product.
