What makes you cry
How to make yourself cry: 11 tips to help you cry right now
The question is: why are we crying?
Crying is our very first reaction as soon as we are in the world.
It's our way of saying, "Hey, I'm here and alive!" Later, crying becomes something else.
In truth, people cry every day. Children cry. Women cry. Men cry.
All people cry because we want to show the world that we are only human and that we have real feelings.
Through crying, we express our deepest feelings of dissatisfaction, longing, sadness, and sometimes even joy.
Our bodies let us know that our soul is longing for something or has been hurt in one way or another.
If we want a more scientific answer, Dr. Ad Vingerhoets, the author of Why Only Humans Weep.
In his opinion, there are two main triggers for adult crying. “The first is helplessness and powerlessness,” he says. "The second, separation and loss."
We have to agree with him because when we go deep inside it sums up pretty much every reason we've ever cried.
Now that we've covered that, one more question remains in the back of our minds:
Why would you want to make yourself cry on purpose?
Well, there are a few reasons for that.
Maybe you've been through a lot and your tears have dried up and you can't remember the last time you cried properly.
Bringing out tears can be good for our mental health. All of the pent-up feelings will pour out of you in the form of tears. You will feel relieved afterwards; real tears will ease your soul and ease your burden.
Crying can be a kind of therapy for you, a self-cleaning that opens up a new perspective to your eyes and gives you a clearer picture of life.
Another reason could be that you're an actor and cry at the push of a button because a certain scene demands that.
Maybe you're a model who has to have tears on your cheek for the perfect photo of pure human sadness.
You may also have your own personal reasons for false or real tears that usually don't even come to mind.
Whatever the reason, here are 11 tips on how to make yourself cry like there's no tomorrow:
1. Recall a sad event from the past
This is the most painful but also the most effective tip.
Just remember the saddest moment in your life and emotional tears will run down your face.
For example, if you went through a painful breakup, you probably cried because of it, and when something like this happens, that's the only logical thing to do.
Your body remembers all the emotions you had when you cried, and the mere thought of that moment when you broke up or you cried alone makes you cry again.
Our body is able to relive everything.
If you find it difficult to think back to the past, try another method.
Remembering sad events that happened in your past, such as the loss of a loved one, a private tragedy, a breakup, etc., are certainly not good for your mental health.
2. Open your eyes wide and don't blink
This type will take a little longer, but if you have time for the don't blink challenge then you should give it a try.
Usually when we blink, our eyes oil themselves as this is how they clean themselves.
So if you keep your eyes open for as long as you can, they'll stop oiling themselves.
Then, when you close them, your lacrimal glands can moisten your dry eyeballs.
Logically, as soon as you start blinking again, your eyes will produce excessive amounts of water - and you will start crying.
It is important to emphasize that this experience can also be a little painful, because in theory dry eyeballs sound more pleasant than they are in practice.
Nonetheless, you can always try this out and if it doesn't work, move on to the next tip.
3. Trust in the power of onions
We've all seen this before. You start chopping an onion, mistakenly believing that maybe this time you won't burst into tears like every single time before.
But no matter what we do or say to ourselves, an onion will always activate our tear glands.
This is because onions contain an enzyme that is released when chopped.
This produces other substances and when these come in contact with our eyes they make us cry like little babies.
An onion is the best solution when you need false tears or when you are at home or anywhere where you are comfortable enough to take an onion and cry like a waterfall.
4. Try the menthol method
Have you ever wondered how you can make yourself cry like in a drama?
Actors cry at the push of a button in all films, TV shows and theater appearances, but how do they do it?
You can't always put yourself in the shoes of a role and expect emotional tears to pop up.
There must be something else.
Well, one of the most popular tricks is a tear pen with menthol and a tear producer with menthol.
With the pen, you just have to apply some of it directly under the eye. The tear producer, in turn, is a spray that works immediately.
If you are tired, yawning will help you. The tears will pop up immediately.
When we yawn, the muscles of the face around our eyes tighten.
Our lacrimal glands (the ones above our upper eyelids, just below our eyebrow bones) feel a slight pressure, causing them to release tears that they had stored there.
So if you want to cry a little, yawn very hard and the result will be seen immediately.
6. Use eye drops
All you need for a waterfall of tears are a few euros and a short walk to the nearest pharmacy.
Eye drops contain saline, which causes instant tears.
They're easy to use - all you have to do is put a few drops in your eye and that's it.
One piece of advice - hide the evidence because you don't want to be accused of faking crying.
7. Gently rub your eyes
The emphasis is on gentle because you don't want to hurt yourself.
When you finish rubbing your eyes for a few seconds, open your eyes and stare at a specific point until the tears start to flow.
Just put your index finger on one of your pupils. It will no doubt irritate your eyes and make you cry a little.
If you add deep breaths and sobbing sounds, your crying scene will be more convincing.
8. Listen to sad music or watch a sad movie
Music affects us in many ways.
It can help us be more creative while we write, it can relax us, dispel our anger, and make us cry.
If you want to cry like a little baby, classical music will help you.
All of the instruments show your body that it is time to release all toxic thoughts that have ever entered our body.
And it gets through tears. Music is a cleansing tool for our soul.
If you're not the music type, a sad movie is a good substitute for it, although watching a movie definitely takes more time than listening to a song.
Whatever you choose, you are welcome to improvise and, if necessary, adapt.
9. Repeat certain phrases
This tip works on the principle that we believe what we say.
Think of a few phrases that usually make you feel sad or feel sorry for someone.
Focus and listen to yourself as you say these phrases. For it to work, you have to believe they are true!
If it doesn't work, try looking at yourself in the mirror and repeating it.
Looking at yourself in the mirror will give you a better insight into your perspective and it will feel like you are actually speaking to yourself.
Try to repeat it at intervals so that you don't force yourself too much, as that would do the opposite.
10. Imagine a dialogue
Imagine yourself having a dialogue with someone who always made you feel bad about yourself, or someone who just knows how to make you sad.
You can write it down and read it a few times before you recite it.
Immediately you have the feeling that this person is here with you and your tears feel that too.
You can again use a mirror to make it look more convincing to you.
11. Read something sad
You have probably already read something that made you sad about a certain person or thing.
It could be a confession, a sad love story, a missing pet, or something similar.
This tip comes in handy as you can always google it and find your own sad story that evokes empathy in you and makes you cry.
No matter how much you think you are tough, there isn't a single person who doesn't cry when they read something shocking or extremely painful.
We are all empathetic, but only to a certain extent.
Some people need a little more time, and others have no problem crying when they read something heartbreaking.
A few more things to remember and what to look out for:
If you're an actor or a model, you've probably heard the motto, "Practice makes perfect".
The same goes for this situation; faking crying is something you will get better at with time and the necessary determination.
Your scene will look better if you manage to become one with the character you are playing.
So stay tuned, don't force it and let your emotions do the rest.
If that doesn't help, then try one of these “how to make yourself cry” tips above.
On the other hand, if you are trying to cry because you no longer want to feel numb and want to evoke your feelings, the first thing you should do is to stop keeping it inside of you.
Set your feelings free. Confront your grief.
Recall your memories. Then once the tears start flowing, you will feel better.
You will at least feel that some of that burden has fallen off your shoulders.
You will gain a new perspective on your situation and your problems.
So don't hold back your tears, don't run from your feelings; no matter how bad they may be, looking them in the face, howling at them, and eventually loosening them is always the better solution.
Once you can do that, you will feel liberated and ready to start over.
