I am 24 years old and I can get married

Age difference? The best age for marriage and relationship

Which of these groups do you belong to? To the Germans under 30 who still have their first marriage ahead of them? To the married between 30 and 40 years of age? To those around 50 who are hovering between the first divorce and the second yes-word? Or are you one of the eternal bachelors?

Either way: The classic marriage at a young age and until "death do us part" is slowly dying out. Men in particular take their time with marriage: at the age of 23, for example, twice as many women stand in front of the altar in this country as men.

The age distribution shows that men's marriage behavior lags two to three years behind that of women. Do you let off steam beforehand, dedicate yourself to professional self-realization or are simply still looking for the right person.

Hover your mouse over the curves, select the age you want and find out how many women and men get married at that age each year.

How old is the spouse usually?

The shift is of course also related to the fact that in many heterosexual partnerships the man is a little older than the woman. Or? How much is the old prejudice that men like to look for a younger boy?

You can find out who is marrying whom in our interactive graphic: It shows that men between the ages of 40 and 44 mainly marry women between the ages of 35 and 39. Conversely, women between 40 and 44 have partners in the age group between 40 and 49 years.

It has actually long been the rule in Germany that older men lead younger women to the age of marriage. In the approximately 382,000 marriages in 2010, the men were older than the women in more than 70 percent of the cases, and in nine percent both were of the same age. Only in 20 percent of the couples were the women older.
