What is the option for weekend jobs

These 34 part-time jobs guarantee the highest income

Definition of part-time job

A part-time job is a professional activity that is often carried out in addition to studying or a main activity for a maximum of 20 to 30 hours per week. In principle, every German can exercise as many jobs as he likes. The 450 euro jobs also fall under this principle. However, the total income of all marginal employment must not exceed the limit of 450 euros per month. Only if this is the case will the serious part-time jobs remain insurance-free for the employee and will not be entered on the income tax card. That way you can earn money quickly and without any risk.

First steps to a part-time job

If you do not have a permanent employment contract, you can immediately look for a part-time job and increase your income. But employees can also take advantage of this opportunity. Often the question arises whether the boss can forbid this part-time job. But that is not the case, because what an employee does in his spare time after work cannot be dictated by the boss. Many employment or collective bargaining agreements require that you inform your employer about secondary employment. But the boss can still not forbid the employee to do serious part-time jobs, even if it is in the employment contract.

Taxes on part-time jobs

In general, a € 450 part-time job is not taxable. Anyone who exceeds this amount must state the part-time job in the tax return. However, there is a chance of getting the tax back after filing the tax return. This happens, for example, if the taxable portion is below the annual basic tax allowance. This is currently 9,408 euros for single people and 18,816 euros for married people. However, early retirees with a part-time job over 450 euros are completely subject to social insurance. Old-age pensioners, on the other hand, are exempt from pension and unemployment insurance contributions, but nursing and health insurance contributions are due.

Example of a tax calculation for serious part-time jobs

To illustrate the calculation of taxes for a part-time job, the following scenario is assumed:

Laura is a marketing student and has a part-time job as a student assistant in an agency. Since her main job is studying, she is in tax class I as a single person. However, she works more than the regular 20 hours per week, which is why her income is taxed in the same way as for full-time employees. So 25 hours of weekly working time and a gross annual salary of 12,000 euros. Since this amount of your part-time job is above the tax exemption of 9,408 euros, it is taken into account in the tax and must be stated in the tax return.

Working hours for a part-time job

There is a specification in the so-called Working Hours Act for the working hours for a part-time job. There it says as follows:

“The working day of the employee may not exceed eight hours. It can only be extended to up to ten hours if within six calendar months or within 24 weeks an average of eight hours on workdays is not exceeded. "

That means for a serious part-time job:

  • a maximum of 48 hours per week is allowed as working time
  • those who increase the hours per day can use a weekly working time of up to 60 hours if the weekly working time can be equalized to an average of 48 hours within six months

So if you work full-time five days a week, you can still do a part-time job eight hours a week and earn money quickly and without risk. An extension of the maximum daily working time to ten hours is therefore possible for a part-time job if the break and rest times are observed.

Students with student loans and serious part-time jobs

Students who want to take on a part-time job are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours per week during the semester. This regulation applies so that studies continue to come first. Only then are students still entitled to student loans and receive child benefit. Those who receive student loans should not earn more than 5,400 euros a year, otherwise the student loans will be reduced accordingly. The annual basic tax allowance is also important for students and is currently 9,408 euros. Those who stay below do not have to pay taxes for these serious part-time jobs. Anyone who earns more than 450 euros a month as a student must pay into the pension insurance and register with a health insurance company.

Unemployed with a part-time job

Unemployed people can also take on part-time jobs. However, they must report these serious part-time jobs to the employment agency before starting and they are not allowed to work more than 14 hours a week. After 15 hours they are no longer considered unemployed according to the Social Security Code and are therefore not entitled to unemployment benefit. There is also the following difference between ALG 1 and ALG 2 recipients:

  • ALG-1 recipient: If earnings are more than 165 euros net per month, the employment office will offset the excess amount against unemployment benefits.
  • ALG-2 recipient: The first 100 euros are free of charge. 20 percent of gross income between 100 and 1,000 euros per month is free of charge, and 10 percent of monthly part-time income between 1,000 and 1,200 euros.

Student with a part-time job

Schoolchildren are not allowed to earn more than 450 euros a month with a part-time job and are therefore tax-exempt. In general, a part-time job is only allowed from the age of 13, whereby the following conditions apply:

  • only light occupations are possible with the serious part-time jobs
  • the working time must not exceed two hours per day
  • working hours must be between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
