Protect your OneDrive files in Personal Vault

OneDrive personal safe is a protected area in which you can store your most important or confidential files and photos without having to forego convenient access from anywhere.

We'll walk you through the process of setting up a strong authentication method for your personal safe or a second step of identity verification, for example with a fingerprint, your face, the PIN or a code sent to you via email or SMS. Your locked files in the personal vault will then have that extra layer of security, which will keep them more secure in the event that someone gains access to your account or device.

Important:

  • The personal safe is available for OneDrive Home and Personal plans, but not for OneDrive for Business or business, school and university accounts. More information can be found here in the plans.

  • The personal safe is available via OneDrive on the web, the mobile app, and your Windows 10 PC.

The personal safe is automatically locked after a certain period of inactivity. After that, you need to unlock it to access your files again. All of your documents, photos and videos in the personal safe are easily accessible via onedrive.com, your PC or other suitable devices.

What security limits are enforced by the personal safe?

The two-step verification is required to access the personal vault.

Currently, Windows 10 personal vault does not protect the names or hash values of files in your personal vault when the vault is locked. The OneDrive team is aware of this limitation and will endeavor to extend protection to these attributes in a future update.

When a personal vault file is opened in a Windows application, the name of the file may appear in the Recently Used list and elsewhere in Windows. Consider opening files from the personal vault on OneDrive.com to avoid this behavior.

Why should I use Personal Vault instead of two-step verification for my entire Microsoft account?

Microsoft's two-step verification is there to help protect you by making it harder for others to sign in to your Microsoft account. It uses two different forms of identity: your password and a contact method. Even if someone else learns your password, it won't get them very far if you don't have access to your security information. If you enable two-step verification, every time you sign in on a device that you haven't trusted, a security code will be sent to your email address, phone, or authenticator app. Two-step verification applies to all apps that require a Microsoft account sign in. For some users, this can result in large frictional losses.

The personal safe offers low friction losses and quick access to an area of OneDrive that provides an additional layer of security for your most important files. For more information, see Using Two-Step Verification.

What are the advantages of using Personal Vault over two-step verification for my Microsoft account?

If you're already using two-step verification for your Microsoft account, Personal Vault has a few more security benefits, including:

  • Files in the personal vault are encrypted using BitLocker when used locally on a Windows 10 PC.

  • Files in the personal vault are not stored unprotected or cached on your PC, on your device or in the browser.

  • The sharing of files in the personal vault is blocked, which means you cannot accidentally share a file from the personal vault.

  • The personal safe is locked after a set number of minutes (the automatic lock interval varies depending on the device and you can set it individually)

Can I edit Office documents in my personal safe?

Editing of Office documents (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) is only supported on a PC or the web.

You can view documents in a mobile app, but you must move a document out of your personal vault to edit it.
