Many people's goals in life differ from one another. Some people know from childhood what they want to achieve. For others, the path of life is apparently mapped out. And still others wake up on the morning of their 30th birthday and wonder where the time has gone? What has become of all the goals in life - has that already been all? The realization that you can't achieve everything in life is scary for some people. In doing so, the meaning and purpose of goals in life are disregarded. What are life goals?

Goals in life are desires, things that you want to achieve in life. Some goals in life contain an approximate indication of time. Many, however, are vague - children often formulate the classic: "When I grow up ..." Small children cannot yet grasp temporal dimensions, they live in the here and now. The knowledge that there is present, past and future, that time is a finite resource, only grows with the years of life and thus with experience.

Until then, many have a vague feeling. Rather, children often believe that everything will be different when they reach adulthood. It is only slowly that the realization matures that age alone contributes very little to whether we achieve our goals in life or not. At some point you will at least come of age - but life goals (if any) are far from being. So it is not surprising that even young people in their twenties - who from the point of view of an eighty-year-old still have their whole life ahead of them - slip into a quarter-life crisis.

What do you need goals in life for?

Whether you call it life goals, wishes or visions - the idea of ​​something that you absolutely want to achieve, that you enjoy or that is important to you, is the engine behind everything. Strictly speaking, the inner, the intrinsic motivation.

  • Do you want to graduate from school? So learn.
  • Do you want to get a promotion? So show your commitment.

No matter what goals you have in lifewhether short term or long term, they cause you to make certain efforts to achieve them. Of course, there are always setbacks. Perhaps you had originally planned a career in competitive sports.

You have been training in the club since the 5th grade, you have been certified as talented and promised great things. Unfortunately, the body doesn't play along, and protracted injuries keep coming, so that this original goal has to be given up.

If there are no further goals in life, if someone only fixes himself completely on one option, it is quite natural that he falls into a deep hole if the goal turns out to be unachievable. This can happen even when a goal is reached: You have been working towards something for years, it was your only content and suddenly there is nothing left - goal achieved - and now?

The two examples already show the importance of goals in life and how important it is to have not just one thing in mind, but preferably a whole bundle.

List of possible goals in life

At the same time, goals in life can be not only a motor, but also a source of happiness, satisfaction and self-esteem. Namely, when they are achieved.

They let you mature into the personwho you are or want to become. This can relate to completely different areas of life. The job as an important category is obvious, but self-realization does not have to take place on the professional track. Let's just take this small list of goals in life that are chosen completely arbitrarily and therefore can look very different individually:

  • Emigrate to your favorite country and work there.
  • Eat healthier and cook for yourself.
  • Meet your favorite star once in a lifetime.
  • Get married, have children, build a house.
  • Finally quit smoking.
  • Dine in a four-star restaurant.
  • Take a trip around the world through every continent.
  • Get a pet.
  • Start your own business with an idea.
  • Lie in a hammock in the Caribbean and do nothing.
  • At some point get the driver's license / sailing license / airplane license.
  • Learn a second foreign language.
  • Learn to play the piano.
  • Exercise regularly and more.

How are life goals determined?

Which goals in life we ​​develop and which we achieve are shaped by several factors. To be honest: not all goals can be achieved. There are different reasons for this:

  • origin

    Social origin continues to play a major role in Germany. Quite banal: As a child of rich parents, someone is naturally provided with knowledge of opportunities differently than when they come from a poor background. Attending private schools is one option, but the material resources are another too. Access to knowledge is often crucial - even if there are funding opportunities for the financially disadvantaged, they are often not used due to a lack of knowledge.

  • Skills

    The own skills that you develop in the course of life have a decisive effect on the achievement of life goals. This can relate to specific specialist knowledge as well as social skills. If, on the one hand, you would have liked to become an aerospace engineer, but have no physical or technical talent, you would be missing crucial skills. The same when you have always dreamed of being incredibly popular with all sorts of people, but at the same time you have total difficulty reaching out to other people. Of course, skills - regardless of whether they are hard skills or soft skills - don't have to be cemented. The question is always how much effort is worthwhile: In general, it is said that it is easier to develop existing strengths than to fight weaknesses (especially if they are strong) with all your might.

  • Surroundings

    The environment also has an influence. How much support do you get from friends, family, colleagues or mentors? They may have a different view of things and can help with insider tips that are useful in achieving a goal in life. Conversely, the environment can also be a hindrance. Do you want to keep a dog, but live in a 1-room apartment? Or the landlord says no? You could move, but you may not be able to move because of other circumstances such as housing market, obligations and the like.

  • Constitution

    Other goals in life depend on your own constitution. You would like to climb Mount Everest, but you are physically unable to do so. The same is possible with unfulfilled wishes for children. You may also want to quit, but your state of mind is preventing you from doing so, so you keep putting this resolution off.

This is how you develop goals in life

As can be seen from the list above, in principle you can develop goals in life for anything. If you struggle with this, try these four tips:

  • Define your values

    What makes you special What is important to you? Everyone has certain values ​​that they consider important. For example, a life goal could be to be vegetarian or vegan because you are already committed to climate and animal protection. Or the other way round: You have been vegan for a number of years, your goal in life is to advance an animal welfare organization that you are committed to.

  • Think about time periods

    For example, you can use time constraints to think about what you would like to have achieved by when. Some goals such as choosing a partner, starting a family and building a house cannot be achieved overnight, others such as a visit to a luxury restaurant can be achieved at short notice - provided that the necessary change is available.

  • Identify your weaknesses

    As already mentioned, there are goals in life that cannot be achieved. This may be because you chose them incorrectly or at least defined them unrealistically. If a goal in life is to go to the moon, most of humanity will not achieve it. At least not as long as space tourism is not a matter of course. Knowing your own shortcomings and weaknesses is therefore important because it allows you to decide which goals should not be pursued further and which, on the other hand, are worthwhile.
