How should I check my engine oil

Check the oil level: this is how it works!

Checking the oil level (cars with dipstick):

  1. The most unsettling question is whether the oil level is checked when the engine is warm or cold? The answer is simple:
The engine must be warm for a correct measurement - should have driven at least 10 kilometers. This is the only way for the engine oil to collect well in the oil pan.
  2. Park the car on a level surface.
  3. Stop engine
  4. Wait approx. 2 minutes so that the warm engine oil can collect in the oil pan.
  5. Pull out the dipstick (in the engine compartment, usually near the filler neck) and clean it (paper tissue).
  6. Insert the dipstick completely into the measuring opening again as far as it will go and carefully pull it out again.
  7. Measure the oil level: The oil film must reach the area between the markings Min and Max pass. If that is the case: completely reinsert the dipstick and continue driving with satisfaction.

Check the oil level (cars with electronic measurement in the on-board computer)

  1. In order to be able to measure the oil level correctly, the engine needs operating temperature - so it should have driven at least 10 kilometers.
  2. Park the car on a level surface.
  3. Stop engine
  4. Wait approx. 2 minutes so that the oil can collect.
  5. Call up the item oil level in the on-board computer (see operating instructions)
  6. If everything is ok: look forward to driving on. If necessary, top up engine oil according to the instructions for the on-board computer.

What to do if there is not enough engine oil?

If the oil level is below the minimum mark: Carefully top up with suitable engine oil up to the maximum mark. For orientation: if the oil level is at min, if you refill about a liter of oil, then it is at the max mark. It is best to top up the engine oil in stages (approx. 0.1 liters), wait about 2 minutes and check the oil level again. This avoids dangerous overfilling, because too much engine oil also damages the engine.
VERY IMPORTANT: After refilling, screw the oil cap back on securely. Otherwise the engine oil will be thrown out while driving.

If your car constantly needs too much oil, you should check the reasons for the oil consumption being too high.

What to do if there is too much engine oil?

To be on the safe side, wait a few minutes, then clean the dipstick again and check the oil level again. If it is still clearly too high, speak to the trustworthy workshop and discuss how to proceed. This also applies if you accidentally noticeably topped up with too much engine oil. Too much engine oil can be foamy: the lubrication performance decreases and the oil can also get into the intake tract and cause damage there.

Measure the oil level regularly of the engine oil in your car. If you are traveling with an oil level that is too low, you endanger the engine. Too much engine oil is also harmful. Modern engine oils are much more efficient than they used to be, but that only applies if you regularly check whether there is enough engine oil available. Ideally, you should check the oil level every time you stop for fuel - regardless of whether it is diesel or gasoline. In any case, before long journeys, especially when going abroad.
