Airén - the Spaniard's favorite white grape variety

The most widely grown grape variety for Spanish white wines is called Airén. For a long time it was among the top 3 grape varieties in the world in terms of area, although it only grows within Spain. At least it still covers today a quarter of the total area under cultivation on the Iberian Peninsula. The grape variety is translated as "Weißer vom Rhein". Monks are said to have brought the grape variety from France to Spain in the twelfth century. A relatedness to the Alsatian one based on the name Riesling but is not available. Pardillo grows in Castilla-La Mancha, Ribeira del Guardiana and other regions of central Spain. This grape variety was once only found in sherry.
