"And we sent Lot. At that time, when he said to his people: 'Do you want to commit such an abomination in which none of the inhabitants of the world have before you? a people who go too far. '"

Islam's position on homosexuality is based on these Quranic statements about the prophet Lot. Lot's portrayal comes very close to the biblical one. The residents of Sodom are sentenced for their sins. One of those sins was that men became intimate with other men instead of women.

The Prophet Mohammed also condemned the actions of the people to whom Lot was sent. This is one of the reasons why the quoted Quranic verses in the context of homosexuality are understood as authoritative by the Ulamâ '. Ulamâ 'are Muslim scholars who have studied the revelations of the Koran and the teachings of Muhammad since the dawn of Islam. Its aim is to express Islamic law, i.e. the Sharia, and the doctrine of faith in more detail.

Jonathan Brown teaches as an associate professor at Georgetown University (priv.) The classical scholars unanimously considered sexual intercourse between men, which they called sodomy, as prohibited. However, they had different views on the punishment.

Some said the death penalty should be applied. Others said it was a less severe punishment. Still others emphasized that an execution should only take place if someone was convicted several times. Other intimate contacts between men are also prohibited under Islamic law and result in punishments.

Similar legal regulations apply with regard to same-sex contacts among women.

All these provisions fall under the general prohibition of extramarital intimacy, because under Islamic law a marriage is only valid between a man and a woman.

In the Islamic context, however, it would be more appropriate to speak of homosexual acts and not of homosexuality as part of an identity or as a sexual orientation. Islamic law is not interested in what people long for or who they love.

A man may well be attracted to other men. The love between two men or two women may be as strong and meaningful as the love between a man and a woman. None of this matters to Sharia law. It only deals with utterances and actions.

Attraction and sexual relationships between people of the same sex have historically been widespread in Islamic civilization. Muslim authors and poets of the Middle Ages are heirs to the Greek and Persian traditions. There the literary motif of admiration for the beauty of a beardless youth was common. In addition, love for boys was not uncommon in these societies.

Muslim scholars admitted that there was frequent homosexual contact. Because even if Islamic law forbids them, there was little that could be done about it. Indeed, in order to convict someone of fornication, compelling evidence is required. And this compelling evidence is difficult to produce: the Qur'an requires the testimony of four upright, male, Muslim witnesses, all of whom must have seen with their own eyes how the actual sexual act was performed. In view of these requirements, legal prosecutions were rare.
