Which film surprised you the most

The best films in the cinema in 2021: We are particularly looking forward to these highlights

2020 is a difficult year for cinema behind us. For many months it was not possible to go to the cinema - and are still not currently when this special comes out. We don't even know for sure when cinemas in Germany will be allowed to reopen. But we know ...

... that we're really fucking looking forward to it! Even if there are great films on Netflix, Amazon, Disney +, Sky and all the other streaming services, these cannot replace the experience on the big screen for us.

When a tie fighter flies across the screen in “Star Wars”, the Marvel superheroes in “Avengers: Endgame” fight an epic battle or great emotions are generated in a masterpiece like “Little Women”, then it's in the cinema simply a completely different and, above all, much nicer experience than on the couch at home.

And so we look forward to film experiences on the big screen in 2021 - to stars like Tom Cruise with breathtaking stunts in “Mission: Impossible 7” or the postponed remake of the sci-fi epic “Dune”, to name just two titles call.

The best films of 2021: We keep the list up to date

As in the previous year, we will update the special throughout the year. We take on new starts, throw out titles if they didn't convince us, or add films that surprised us. In this way, you will always be up to date on what is currently and soon not to be missed in cinemas in Germany.

In 2021, as in 2020, regular updates of the list will be particularly important, because we anticipate that theatrical release dates will still be diligently postponed - and then we will also adjust the dates here accordingly. Because of course these dates, which you can note in the calendar, traditionally belong to our popular special as well as the directly integrated trailers.

And of course you will learn something about the content of each film and we will tell you why we are already looking forward to it. If we have already seen a film, we will of course explain why the cinema is particularly worthwhile.

Have fun with our extensive list, which is the result of a large survey within the FILMSTARTS editorial team, including our social media and video teams.

We start right here on the first page:

The best films 2021 - 25th place: "The King’s Man: The Beginning"

Theatrical release: "The King’s Man: The Beginning" starts on August 19th!

Director:Matthew Vaughn

Actor:Ralph Fiennes, Harris Dickinson

Genre: Action

That's what it's about: The prequel takes you back to the time when the Kingsmen were founded - and meet Rasputin, Mata Hari and Gavrilo Princip, among others.

That's why we're looking forward to: Matthew Vaughn's "Kingsman: The Secret Service" is cheeky, brutal and totally crazy. Part two - critics and audience agree - couldn't quite keep up. So you could think that the director would now know very well that he has something to make up for. And he has what it takes. He has already proven that he is a master of comics with “Kick-Ass” or “X-Men: First Decision”. Among others, Gemma Arterton, Aaron Taylor Johnson and the German star Daniel Brühl will be there.

The best films 2021 - Place 24: "Eternals"

Theatrical release: "Eternals" starts on November 4th!

Director:Chloé Zhao

Actor:Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden

Genre: Action

That's what it's about: The alien Eternals, endowed with great powers, were created by the godlike Celestials and fight against the destructive Deviants.

That's why we're looking forward to: There are new faces in the MCU and a whole bunch of them - we don't expect the solo adventure of a single hero, but of a whole group! And it is fabulously cast with Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, Kit Harington and Richard Madden (hello! "Game Of Thrones" reunion!). If everything you hear is still true, saying “bigger than the Avengers” and “more wacky than Guardians Of The Galaxy”, then a gigantic and entertaining blockbuster awaits us. We need it even after an involuntary year break from the MCU ...

The best films 2021 - 23rd place: "In The Heights"

Theatrical release: “In The Heights” starts on June 17th!

Director:Jon M. Chu

Actor:Corey Hawkins, Anthony Ramos

Genre: musical

That's what it's about: Various members of a Hispanic New York community have life-changing experiences over three hot summer days

That's why we're looking forward to:Lin-Manuel Miranda is currently the hottest musical producer on Broadway - and word of what he's got should have got around in Germany at the latest with the Disney + release of "Hamilton". One of his successful pieces is now set to hit the big screen and the first trailer is thrilling. After the surprise success “Crazy Rich”, Jon M. Chu seems to be exactly the right director to bring the lively power and emotions of the play to the screen.

The best films 2021 - 22nd place: "Fast & Furious 9"

Theatrical release: "Fast & Furious 9" starts on May 27th!

Director:Justin Lin

Performers:Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez

Genre: Action

That's what it's about: Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his "family" return one more time before the series finale is "Fast & Furious 10". But this time Dom meets real family, his brother (John Cena)

That's why we're looking forward to it: Not only a huge cast of stars - from Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren to John Cena and Vin Diesel - awaits us in the tenth film in the series, but also a returnee on the director's chair. Justin Lin has already staged “Fast & Furious 3 - 6” and thus made the series into the mega-successful bombastic franchise in the first place, the latest additions to each of which grossed well over a billion. Will it get bigger, louder and faster under Lin's leadership?

The best films 2021 - 21st place: "Black Widow"

Theatrical release: “Black Widow” starts on May 6th!

Director:Cate Shortland

Actresses:Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh

Genre: Action

That's what it's about: "Black Widow" plays before "Avengers 4: Endgame". We learn more about how Natasha Romanoff became the Black Widow spy - and the victims involved.

That's why we're looking forward to it: Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow is one of the most interesting heroines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, because you can tell that she has not yet come to terms with her past. Nevertheless, Black Widow has so far only been one figure among many. Now the long overdue solo film, which has a very interesting cast anyway, awaits us: In addition to Florence Pugh, who recently impressed us so much in “Midsommar”, David Harbor (“Stranger Things”) and Oscar winner Rachel Weisz are of course also interesting additions for the MCU.
