How are the economic conditions in the country improving?
Sub-Saharan Africa: More jobs, higher incomes
Getting fit for the jobs of the future, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the “green economy”
An example from Kenya: Youth unemployment there is around 19 percent. With financial support from the BMZ and the European Union, GIZ, together with companies and vocational training centers, has developed further training courses for the professions that are particularly in demand by industry. In the coastal region, young women and men have been trained to become welders, carpenters, painters, electricians, restaurateurs and hotel managers, among others, since the beginning of 2017. Almost 2,700 young Kenyans have now found a permanent job through the initiative or have been able to set up successfully on their own. Over 3,300 training participants also managed to increase their income by at least 10 percent.
In order to create lasting prospects for the people in Africa, the private sector is also on board: More than 70 international and local companies participate in public-private partnerships, working groups and initiatives. With their support, local suppliers are supported, among other things, in becoming more competitive and improving their work processes.
In return, the companies create jobs and training positions and are committed to more comprehensive and better vocational training. New jobs are mainly being created in the raw materials industry, the construction sector, agriculture and the so-called “green economy” - there, among other things, in the areas of water, waste management, energy, tourism, and agriculture and forestry.
Better work: Keeping an eye on your health
But not all workplaces are the same. Employees often have to work under difficult, sometimes inhumane conditions. That is why the BMZ and its partners' program also aims to improve working conditions. In Uganda, for example, GIZ advised 30 companies on health, safety and environmental protection. Accident and health risks have been systematically reduced and international safety standards have been introduced. Around 5,400 employees benefit from this. The new standards also enable companies to apply for international tenders, for example in the raw materials or construction sector.
These and many other activities of the initiative secure existing and create new jobs. This benefits not only the employees themselves, but also their families: With E4D, prospects have been created for a total of around 472,000 people in sub-Saharan Africa.
