  • The federal government expects the total cost of new fighter jets to be CHF 18 billion. The Federal Armaments Office, Armasuisse, announced this estimate.
  • In addition to the planned procurement costs of six billion, around twelve billion would be added for operation - this for the entire useful life of the fighter jets.
  • On September 27, the electorate will vote at the ballot box on the fighter jet proposal.

The Sunday newspaper first reported on the estimate of 18 billion francs. According to Armasuisse, the assumptions would be based on empirical data from the more than twenty years of operation of the currently operating F / A-18 fighter aircraft fleet.

"As a rule of thumb, the operating costs calculated over 30 years should be around twice as high as the procurement expenditure," said official spokesman Kaj-Gunnar Sievert when asked. More precise calculations are currently not possible.

The announcement of the federal government's estimate was preceded by political discussions about the life cycle costs of jets. In some cases, much higher amounts than the 18 billion francs were mentioned. Opponents of the purchase of new fighter planes put the expenditure sometimes at around CHF 24 billion.

People vote at the end of September

The Federal Council and Parliament want to purchase new fighter jets for six billion francs from 2025. These are to replace the existing fleet of F / A-18 and Tiger jets. Because the group for a Switzerland without an army (GSoA), the SP and the Greens have taken the referendum, the people will vote on the bill on September 27, 2020.

There is no vote on the type of aircraft and the number of jets of 36 or 40 pilots. The second round of offers is currently in progress.

The stealth aircraft F-35 from Lockheed Martin, the F / A-18 Super Hornet from Boeing, the Rafale from the French manufacturer Dassault and the Airbus aircraft Eurofighter from Germany are in the running.

I gave a clear yes to the vote! Security has its price. I advise the opponent to take a look beyond the national borders and into the federal constitution.

  • Comment from Alex Schneider (Alex Schneider)
Now I expect plausible scenarios from the proponents of the fighter jets for a promising emergency operation of a Swiss fighter jet ALONE, without the support and tolerance of NATO.

You can also say that you don't believe our government. The fact is that we in Switzerland hardly know better than the remaining 190 countries in the world and shouldn't take the risk of being the only one without a defense.

I see it the same way. Unfortunately, this realization still scratches many egos in this country. So let us keep dreaming who will persuade Switzerland to have some air and interpretive sovereignty through expensive fighter jets. I still hope the country will reflect on its strengths, not its weaknesses!
