From Munich to London: MBS alumna Linda Brosig is now studying at the London School of Economics
Linda Brosig dreamed of studying at the London School of Economics (LSE) while she was still at school. Last year, the MBS alumna was able to fulfill her dream: Since September 2020, Linda has been completing her master's degree at the world-renowned business school. In an interview, she explains why she decided on the bachelor's program at MBS, gives insights into how she structured her studies and reveals how it worked out with a master's application at LSE.
MBS Insights: The London School of Economics has always been your dream school. How did that happen?
Linda Brosig: When I was 14 I decided to go to school in Somerset, England, and did my GCSEs and A-Levels there. I had economics as one of my A-level subjects - and that was my absolute favorite! The LSE is known for its expertise in economics and is named here as one of the top universities worldwide - after all, a quarter of all Nobel Prizes in Economics to date have been awarded to winners who are connected to the LSE. So I saw the university very early on and was able to visit the campus while I was still at school. It's right in the heart of London and I really liked it. London is a beautiful city anyway, which is super international and diverse.
MBS Insights: Nevertheless, you decided to study at MBS first. What attracted you to Munich Business School?
Linda Brosig: Despite the promises of several British universities, I decided to come back to Germany. What appealed to me most about MBS was the international environment and the fact that I was able to complete the course entirely in English - after four years of schooling in England that was much easier for me than studying in German. To complete a business administration degree with a broad spectrum of specialist knowledge in economics. A highlight of the MBS is that many soft skills and networking courses and events are offered. Larger universities are often much more anonymous. At MBS, you have the opportunity to practice so many presentations, group work and leadership roles that you gain a completely different level of self-confidence in lectures and often forget the nervousness. That turned out to be one of the most valuable things for me and was extremely helpful in my internships between bachelor and master studies.
MBS Insights: What were the highlights of your MBS degree and which areas did you choose?
Linda Brosig: My focus was on financial management with Professor Dr. Eva Stumpfegger and Corporate Governance with Professor Dr. Carsten Rennhak. Both subject areas that interested me a lot and professors whose teaching style I liked. For the international focus, I chose Spanish and Latin America because I already had Spanish at A-Level and I wanted to continue the language. Another highlight during my bachelor's degree were definitely the courses from Professor Dr. Harald Müllich and his approach to view the topics not only through the business administration lens, but also from a political and social perspective. His subjects were certainly very demanding, but in the end it was a lot of fun and you gained a lot of general knowledge. The LSE handles things in a very similar way, which reinforced my decision to do my master’s degree there. My semester abroad at the Seoul National University (SNU) in South Korea was also an absolute highlight. In Korea, the SNU is one of the top universities in the country. Through my internship abroad, which I also did in Seoul, I was able to get an even better impression of the country and its people. That was a really good six months!
MBS Insights: Can you tell us what you dealt with in your bachelor thesis?
Linda Brosig: My topic for the bachelor thesis was "The Impact of Top Management Team Diversity on Firm Performance". For this purpose, I conducted interviews with seven C-level executives from different companies and asked them how their perception of diversity affects the performance of their companies. I evaluated the whole thing qualitatively and received very exciting results. As a result of my survey, I was able to state that diversity in management leads to more innovation, ideas and creativity in management. It also became clear that better results can be achieved by different perspectives.
