How can I become a good accountant
Accountant - training, job description, salary and application
Every self-employed or freelancer needs good bookkeeping in order not only to survive well against the tax office, but also to keep an eye on income and expenses themselves.
When the company reaches a certain size, there is no longer any entrepreneur around hiring an accountant for this task. Without a doubt, accounting is a very sensitive area in a company, because if someone has a complete overview of all departments, liquidity or sales, then it is the accountant.
In public institutions, foundations or church institutions, accountants perform a wide range of specialist tasks in finance and accounting. Monthly closing postings or annual financial statements are just as much a part of this as short-term financial planning, processing of payment transactions or dunning.
The bookkeeping is therefore very closely linked to the management and advises them on tax matters.
Salary as an accountant
Depending on the area of responsibility, there are enormous fluctuations for the salary within the accounting department. In addition, experience in the job and qualifications play an important role in earnings. It is not uncommon for there to be additional payments, such as Christmas bonuses or vacation pay.
Accountants can be self-employed and freelance for a company or a person. For the self-employed, however, no statement can be made on the salary.
Using the collective agreement of a federal state as an example, the gross salary for accountants can be around EUR 2,700 to EUR 3,000 per month. Depending on the region or federal state, however, there are clear differences.
Apprenticeship and advanced training as an accountant
The job description requires a completed commercial training over three years, in addition, at least two years of professional experience in finance or accounting must be present.
The training to become an accountant can be carried out with certain educational institutions, some of which are also subject to their own access restrictions.
There is no training allowance for the period of further training. The training can be completed as a distance learning course, whereby certain phases of on-site presence are almost always required. As a rule, the training is completed part-time, with the prospective accountant continuing to work in the company and training on the weekends.
There are usually fees that are charged by the training provider for further training; depending on the operational support, the employing company can pay the costs.
The advanced training is of different duration and can last between 2 months and 1.5 years, full-time or part-time, depending on how it is carried out, and ends with theoretical and practical examinations (written and oral).
Properties and requirements
Dealing with business figures on a daily basis is part of the craft. Your math skills should therefore be well developed and you should enjoy working with numbers.
In accounting, order is one of the top priorities. To be able to present every receipt within a very short time, to properly book extensive invoice data and always have a complete overview of the financial situation, is only possible with proper bookkeeping.
This overview is particularly important in stressful times, for example for annual financial statements or audits. A certain psychological resilience is therefore an advantage.
Application as an accountant
The application for a job offer as an accountant can be made online or in writing. It is not uncommon for an online application to be expressly requested in the job offer.
An application as an accountant does not have to be particularly creative, what counts is the care, order and structure. The content must be convincing and ideally allow a positive conclusion about the work ability.
Create the application letter according to the standard for business letters and attach great importance to a very good description of the content of your motivation and qualifications for this job.
The curriculum vitae is designed in tabular form. The curriculum vitae contains your personal data as well as your school and professional career.
Accountants shine primarily through their skills, less through their social skills, although these naturally also have a certain value.

Accounting trends and employment figures
There is hardly an area within a company in which the effects of the digital age have been as profound as within accounting. Every accountant today works perfectly with spreadsheet programs that relieve and make considerable work easier.
There are easy-to-use programs even for laypeople, making every small business owner a relatively good accountant. But that does not mean that the accountant is no longer necessary, on the contrary. Controlling and accounting are now more than ever the crucial pillars of a company.
Nevertheless, there has been a steady decline in the number of accountants employed in recent years.
