    Martial arts after spinal stiffening

    Hello,
I'm looking for people here who might be going through the same thing as me / can help me with experiences / tips.
I'm in my mid-30s now, at 18 my spine was stiffened due to scoliosis (12 vertebrae, I still have the last two lumbar vertebrae free, the stiffening begins above this). My doctor said I should move no matter what. Most of the other doctors have generally banned anything other than physical therapy for retirees. But that was and is not an option for me and I also have the impression that many doctors are too restrictive and, as a precaution, say no to everything. For a few years I only skateboarded, then I started boxing, it went well, my doctor said the muscles looked good. Then I started thai boxing and didn't want to do anything else, I've never enjoyed anything so much. But it was clear to me that because of the rotational movements and the kicks, it wasn't really for my spine. . Then I also got pain and the doctor said I shouldn't exercise anymore.
First of all it's mentally difficult for me, I fell in love with thai boxing, even if I only trained for about a year. I've been stuck in a hole for months because of it, don't feel like doing anything and can't really get over the fact that I can't do what I want. Maybe someone had to go through something similar here, I would be interested to know how others have learned to deal with the fact that something that you were very fond of suddenly breaks away.
The other thing is, I'm still looking for a martial art that I can do without breaking my back. Maybe that's a prejudice, but wing-tsun etc. Always felt quite "soft" to me, I like hard, strenuous training where I can learn new techniques that can also help me as self-defense, which I do in my job might well need. Jiu-jutsu etc. Unfortunately, it is canceled because my back should stay straight and I have to be careful with rotational movements. I would be happy if someone can help.

WT is soft (in execution, not in how a hit is supposed to land ...), has many new techniques to learn, and is useful for self-defense.
WT is not strenuous and hard (but there is nothing against doing additional strength training or something else strenuous.)

A training colleague has also stiffened some vertebrae due to scoliosis - not as many as you have - she is doing well. But I also have a very good teacher who knows something about this and who adapts the training accordingly.

Good luck in finding an activity that you enjoy and that works with your back

A friend of mine started karate (Shotokan) after he got a touch of karate in our Jitsu.

But he also says very clearly: He only does what is possible.
If something doesn't work because of his back, he lets stay.

For him, it's not about SV, but just about having a balance to everyday kindergarten life, moving and using your head.
He's great fun running kihon lanes and he assumes he'll enjoy kata too.
