What is hope

Hope doesn't need to be certain that something will be good. Anyone who hopes has a fundamentally positive attitude that something can be good - and draws strength and courage from it. Those who hope trust in the future and look confidently to tomorrow - to what will happen. This generally positive view of life is also referred to as “optimism” or “(future) belief”. Correspondingly, this quality belongs to the three great virtues in Christianity: faith, love, hope.

Typical areas and subject of hope are health, happiness, love and financial security. But people can also hope that the good will win (in the end) or - if they are going through a difficult time - they focus all their wishes on a so-called bearer of hope and savior. In this way, this characteristic becomes an important engine that drives people even in hopeless situations. Synonymous terms are: prospect, chance, expectation, belief, bright spot, optimism, trust or confidence.

What is the difference between hope and optimism?

Both terms - hope and optimism - are often used interchangeably. However, there is a marginal difference: an optimistic person is convinced that they have some control over the outcome (based on their experience or skills). The optimist believes he has an influence. Anyone who hopes also expects a good outcome - but even if it is beyond their own control. Hope knows no reason. Rather, it is the confident “nonetheless” in optimism.

Hope is not a permanent condition

Even strong faith experiences setbacks or is accompanied by negative feelings and doubts. The result is temporary fears, worries, or even hopelessness - the opposite of the original attitude. Depending on the circumstances and changes, this can lead to an emotional rollercoaster. When it comes to life or death, confidence and fear often alternate.

In the extreme or in particularly hopeless situations people can even lose confidence. The once positive belief in the future then gives way to pure despair, up to resignation or even depression. That is why it is important to keep your own hope - literally - so as not to lose it. It is the oxygen for our soul and the essential engine of life. Those who hope can do (almost) anything.

Why is green the color of hope?

The color green not only stands for negative envy - it is also a positive symbol for hope. This is due to the parallel symbolism to nature, the context of growth and fertility: in spring, life conquers winter - the darkness gives way, the days become longer again, everything blossoms and awakens to new life in lush, lush green. The awakening of spring and the symbolism of nature are a reminder that life goes on and on.

Why not lose hope?

“You mustn't give up hope!” - Of course, that's easier said than done. This is incredibly difficult, especially in difficult times. Some veritable advantages show how important it is not to lose one's faith (in spite of this):

  • Stronger motivation
    Anyone who has lost hope also loses the motivation to carry on, to fight, to try. Without hope, there is no strength or reason to persevere, because we fear that in the end everything could be in vain. Conversely: if you hope, you will gain a strong stimulus and motivation. This in turn releases unexpected energies.
  • Achievable goals
    Positive belief in the future is not only a powerful driving force, it gives us determination. Anyone who is convinced that they can create or achieve something overcomes obstacles and setbacks and bites into their goal. Hope leads to action, action to results and a sense of achievement. Effect: We feel confirmed in our hope, carry on and achieve the goal.
  • Improved health and recovery
    Hoping for a cure plays a major role, especially with illnesses. Regardless of the diagnosis: studies show that hope can mobilize enormous self-healing powers (see “placebo effect”). People who have a strong belief that they will get well again improve their defenses, recover faster and have been shown to have a stronger immune system afterwards. You can endure pain better and have less anxiety.

Hope gives us stability and security. Confidence lets us see light at the end of the tunnel and find ways out even in seemingly hopeless situations. It is the best medicine and the spark that can ignite a new light (in us). In short: hope makes you healthy and happy.

6 tips to keep hope

Confidence is the impetus for necessary action and comfort in difficult situations. Whether with a view to a better future, an improvement in health, upcoming plans or big goals. When it is dark and difficult, it is important to maintain your own optimism. But how? It takes a positive mindset. The following tips can give new hope and help you maintain it.

1. Accept the situation

Are you in the wrong job? Are you sick or in an unhappy relationship? Knowledge is the first step towards improvement. From there, you can consider what further steps need to be taken. It is important to accept the situation and not to ignore it. You shouldn't blame yourself either, that doesn't help. To hope means to accept that it is not good at the moment, but that it can generally get better.

2. Let out all negatives

It can be hard to keep hoping while negative thoughts and feelings build up. In order not to lose confidence, it can be helpful to leave out everything negative. Write the frustration from your soul, talk to close caregivers or shout out your fear alone in the room. Let go of the negative and then focus on the positive future again.

3. Find beautiful things for yourself

What do you enjoy? Not all of it has to be laborious or expensive. The beautiful things can also include newly discovered hobbies, where you can try out yourself and your talent and watch your progress. So make sure you have small moments of happiness and glimmers of hope in life.

4. Surround yourself with positive people

Toxic people have that state of mind that only pulls you down if you currently have a problem. Or they rob you of the energy to concentrate on beautiful moments. It is therefore important to find people who can support and encourage you to give you advice.

5. Remember good times

There is always reason to look ahead. As already mused Bertolt Brecht: “He who fights can lose; if you don't fight, you've already lost. ”Do you remember: Which situations or crises have you already mastered that were comparable? What did you have to do for it? The experiences of friends or role models who found themselves in an (apparently) hopeless situation and have found out can also be helpful.

6. Get into action

Passively suffering a fate leads you into the role of victim. It is all the more important that you become active again and shape your "fate". This gives you back control of the situation and opens up new room for maneuver and new perspectives.

When does hope become a problem?

With all positive effects: there is a downside. Persistent hope can block and get in the way of important decisions. Think, for example, of a self-employed person who clings to the fact that his business idea will still be successful (see: Concorde effect). Or an employee who sticks to a job that has long made him unhappy and sick. In all of the situations mentioned, change would always be better than hope and persevere.

We wait longer for good news

In fact, hope can help bridge time and increase stamina - but this does not have to be consistently meaningful or helpful. Some time ago, Peter Ditto, a psychology professor at Princeton University, was able to prove that hopeful people are willing to wait longer for good news. In a specific experiment, the test persons should wait for a health diagnosis or prognosis from a test strip. It was of course manipulated and never discolored. But if you thought that the discoloration certifies positive health, you waited significantly longer. In some cases, the researcher even had to stop the experiment because the participants were still hoping that the discoloration would still occur.

This is how you can tell when something is pointless

The experiment shows impressively that unshakable self-belief can lead to stagnation. We wait and hope instead of taking the necessary steps to be able to develop further. Ditto's study is proof that hope dies last, but (self) knowledge died long before that. So sometimes it can be better to see that something is pointless rather than clinging to hope. How do you do that? For example like this:

  • Know the time! Believing in yourself and your success is a good thing. Often only this persistence leads to the goal and success. Holding on, however, can also lead straight to ruin. It is therefore important to regularly subject your goals and paths to a fact check. Times are changing. Markets and business models as well. If the warning signs and countertrends increase, it may be time for a correction.
  • Recognize yourself! Necessary corrections require openness. But because we often only want to hear good news, we become deaf to the bad. Technical jargon: selective perception. Originally a kind of safety mechanism in our brain to distinguish important from unimportant, this self-deception often leads to filter bubbles, wrong judgments and wrong conclusions. You have already taken the most important step against this form of mental blindness with this reading: You are now aware of it. Honest external feedback and honest self-reflection also strengthen eyesight.
