What are the characteristics of the Native American people

Human - Where are the Native Americans from?

Long before America was discovered in 1492, the continent was inhabited by indigenous people. It was Eurasian settlers who came from Siberia via the Bering Strait - according to the classical theory. But current studies show that the Amazon peoples have different ancestors.

The ancestors of the Native American people came from Eurasia. About 20,000 years ago they used a land bridge between Siberia and Alaska that had formed during the last glacial period.

An unexpected sensation

So far it was assumed that these settlers spread over the north and south continents in a single wave of immigration (see box).

However, current genetic analyzes, Link opens in a new window, show that at least two Amazonian peoples have a strong genetic similarity to the people who populate New Guinea, Australia and islands in the Bay of Bengal today.

When and how their ancestors came to America is unclear. It cannot be ruled out that there is a second start-up population.

Further genetic studies, such as the analysis of archaeological finds, could clarify which group of immigrants reached the continent first.

During the last glacial period, Eurasian immigrants reached the Northwest of America. They spread along the coast and reached the extreme south, to Tierra del Fuego, about 14,000 years ago. With the retreat of the melting ice masses around 1000 years later, a group split off in North America and advanced inland.

The "Discovery of America in 1492"? Everyone knows by now that Leif Eriksson has already been to North America. In addition, based on the legendary texts about Brendan the traveler, it is even conceivable that he was in North America as early as the 6th century. At least Timothy Severin sailed from Ireland to North America on a boat from that time in 1976, so it would have been possible.

How can one even speak of a discovery when several million people have already lived there? Sounds kind of like you can only look at Western Europeans as human beings.

"Eurasian settlers" - that sounds good. Europe and Asia are actually one continent.
