Can I take Ativan and CBD oil
Can you take CBD oil with other medications?
Is CBD Dangerous? Many people hope that cannabidiol (CBD) will provide benefits for anxiety, depression, pain or sleeping. Here we address the question of whether CBD interacts with other drugs.
According to a study presented at the 2019 European Congress of Rheumatology Annual Meeting, 52 percent of respondents said they used CBD for medical reasons.
93 percent of respondents said this was helpful. More than half said they wanted more information about CBD from their doctor, but they weren't getting enough information about safety, effectiveness, and dosage.
Research to date shows that CBD is generally safe and has few, if any, minor side effects.
Additionally, there have been no reports of serious drug-drug interactions between over-the-counter CBD oil.
What are the interactions of CBD with drugs?
When you take a drug, your body has to break it down. Most drugs, including CBD, are from the same large family of Liver enzymes, CYP450, reduced.
- On the one hand, CBD can inhibit some of these enzymes. This causes certain drugs to break down more slowly. This means that both their effects and their side effects can last longer.
- On the other hand, CBD can activate certain enzymesn. This accelerates the breakdown of certain drugs, so they may be less effective if the dose is not increased.
Which drugs are affected?
- Sleeping pills
- Macrolide antibiotics (erythromycin, clarithromycin)
- Heart medications (some calcium channel blockers)
- Blood thinners (vitamin K antagonists, also called coumarins)
Now please don't panic!
Even if you're taking any of these drugs, your doctor may be able to make a plan by timing or monitoring drug levels. That way, you can use both your medication and CBD.
What do we know for sure about the interactions between CBD and other drugs? The information on the interactions comes from studies in which CBD as a prescription drug in extremely high concentration was used.
There have been no reports of serious drug-drug interactions between over-the-counter CBD oil.
Does CBD oil interact with drugs for arthritis or rheumatism (e.g. ibuprofen)?
Based on what we now know about the way CBD is metabolized, we don't expect serious interactions between CBD oil and drugs commonly used to treat arthritis or joint pain (methotrexate and most anti-inflammatory drugs non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs for short).
Are older people at higher risk for CBD interactions?
As you age, the liver and kidneys remove drugs more slowly from the body. In addition, older patients with chronic health problems are more likely to take multiple medications, so the risk of drug interactions generally increases, whether or not taking CBD.
If you are prone to dizziness, you should always be careful with any medication that makes you tired. In this way you reduce the risk of falling.
Are There People Who Shouldn't Take CBD?
Be careful if you have liver damage. This generally applies to all painkillers and of course to alcohol.
Do hemp ointments with CBD reduce the risk of interactions?
With hemp ointments, the CBD does not get deep enough to raise concerns about drug interactions.
Who in the healthcare sector needs to know I'm taking CBD?
It is always advisable to tell all doctors who prescribe medication for you what else you are taking. Buying all of your medications from the same pharmacy will allow your pharmacist to assess the interactions of all medications, regardless of who prescribed them.
Can I find out online which of my drugs are interacting with CBD?
Free online databases tend to be unreliable. This shows the importance of discussing all of your medications, including CBD, with your doctor or pharmacist.
Has anyone had a life threatening interaction with CBD?Research to date shows that CBD is generally safe and has few, if any, minor side effects. Additionally, there have been no reports of serious drug-drug interactions between over-the-counter CBD oil.
